Fellini's Clowns: Between Childish Terror and Universal Wisdom When seven-year-old Federico was first taken to the circus, he did not laugh. He stood still. He did not understand who these people in colorful costumes with painted faces were — \"animals or spirits?\" He did not find them funny. This childhood fear, mixed with reverent shivering, remained with him for life and culminated in one of the most personal and piercing films of the great Italian — \"Clowns\" (1970). But to understand this film and the role of the clown in Fellini's world, one must delve into Italian culture, where masks and laughter have always been something more than mere entertainment. Italian Roots: When the Mask Becomes Philosophy The Italian tradition of clowning does not begin and end with the circus. Its roots lie in the famous commedia dell'arte, the theater of masks, which conquered all of Europe in the 16th–17th centuries. It was a theater without words, where actors in masks performed improvisational scenes full of buffoonery, acrobatics, and grotesque. It was there that archetypal masks were born — the cunning and agile Harlequin, the naive and sad Pierrot, the proud and foolish Pantalone. These characters did not simply entertain — they mocked the vices of society, exposing human foolishness and hypocrisy. From this tradition grew modern clowning. The white clown — solemn, important, self-assured — is the direct heir of the old masks of \"master\" and \"intellectual.\" The red clown — clumsy, restless, always getting into trouble — embodies the folk jester, the Harlequin who is always ready to turn the world upside down. Their eternal conflict is not just a circus act, it is a metaphor for the entire human existence. And Fellini, more than anyone else, understood this.
