Historical Roots: From Saint Nicholas to Postal Services The prototype of the tradition was the cult of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, known for his secret charity. In the Netherlands, there was a custom of placing children's shoes by the fireplace on the night of December 6 (Saint Nicholas Day or Sinterklaas), so that in the morning they would find sweets or small gifts in them. Written requests were a logical development of this custom. The turning point was mass literacy and the development of postal communication in the 19th century.
