Baltasar Garzón: A Judge Who Challenged the System In the history of modern Spain, there is a name that is either praised or cursed, but never indifferent. Baltasar Garzón is a person who has become a living symbol of the fight against corruption, pursued dictators, terrorists, and financial fraudsters, but eventually ended up on the defendant's bench. His career is a drama in three acts, where justice, politics, and personal fate are intertwined into a tight knot. Garzón challenged the most powerful forces in Spain—and paid for it with his robe. But his case is not over. It continues to live in disputes over where law ends and justice begins. The Man Who Became the Youngest Judge in the History of Spain Baltasar Garzón was born on October 26, 1955, in the city of Torres (Jaén province). At the age of 32, he became the youngest investigating judge in the history of the Spanish National Court. In a country that had just emerged from the Francoist dictatorship, Garzón quickly gained a reputation as an uncompromising fighter against crime. He led cases against ETA terrorists, fought against drug trafficking and financial fraud. But his true international fame came in 1998, when he secured the arrest of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet in London. This was the first time an European judge had held the head of a foreign state accountable for crimes against humanity.
