Sewing Machine Day June 13th. A date that means nothing to most people. But for tailors, seamstresses, designers, and housewives, it's a small celebration. Sewing Machine Day. Unofficial, but well-deserved. On this day in 1790, the Englishman Thomas Saint received a patent for the first sewing machine. Of course, that machine was bulky and only made straight stitches, but it laid the groundwork for the revolution in sewing. Today, we can't imagine life without the sewing machine. Bone and metal needles. Threads made of fibers. Stitch by stitch. Tailors spent days making one shirt. In the 18th century, the first mechanisms that mimicked the movements of the hand appeared. But they were imperfect. Thomas Saint's patent described a machine with a needle having a loop at the tip (like the modern one). But his invention did not gain widespread distribution. The breakthrough came in the 19th century. First Commercial Success: Singer In 1850, the American Isaac Singer improved the design of the sewing machine: added a bobbin, foot pedal. In 1851, he patented the machine and founded the Singer company. This was a turning point. Singer machines were sold worldwide, including in Russia. They were expensive, but they paid for themselves due to speed. By the end of the 19th century, the sewing machine had ceased to be a luxury, becoming a necessity for every housewife.
