It is believed that the festival was inspired by the American artist Harvey Ball, who in the mid-20th century, while fulfilling an order for an insurance company, came up with a yellow smiling face — that very smiley that everyone on the planet knows today. The first smileys were made in the form of badges that were attached to clothing with a pin. They quickly gained popularity worldwide, and soon their image appeared on t-shirts, baseball caps, greeting cards, and even postage stamps. According to another version, the festival was initiated by the American organization "Smiley," which promotes positive social initiatives. Initially, the festival was planned to be celebrated on the third Monday of June, but later the date was changed to June 25 to coincide with the international community.
