The Stadium as a Temple: Sacred Architecture of the Modern World Introduction: From the Sacred Grove to the Concrete Chalice The concept of the stadium as a temple is not a metaphor but a reflection of a profound socio-anthropological reality. The sacralization of sports facilities dates back to antiquity, where Olympia with its Temple of Zeus and stadium was a religious-sports complex. In the modern secular society, the stadium has taken on key functions of the temple: it is a place of collective ritual, worship of the "sacred" (athletes), experiencing catharsis, and expressing identity. A scientific analysis of this paradigm reveals it through the lens of architectural semiotics, sociology, and philosophy. Architectural Codes of Sacralization The architecture of the stadium consciously or unconsciously imitates the features of cultic structures: Centrality and the enclosedness of the universe: The bowl-shaped form (Greek stadion — a place for competitions) creates a separated from the outside world temenos (sacred area). All gazes are directed to the center — the arena, analogous to an altar or sanctuary where the main action takes place. The roofs of modern stadiums, like the domes of basilicas, encompass and unite the space. Hierarchy of space: The stands are structured according to social and economic status (boxes, VIP sections, general stands), similar to the hierarchy in a temple. The sacred center is not only the field but also the "cup" (bowl) of the championship trophy, carried in key moments.
