According to tradition, in the 3rd century AD, during the persecutions of Christians under Roman Emperor Decius, the seven young men hid in a cave to escape persecution. By the will of God, they fell asleep and slept for nearly 200 years. When they woke up, the world around them had changed beyond recognition — Christianity had become the state religion of the Roman Empire.This story, known as \"The Seven Sleepers of Ephesus,\" was extremely popular in medieval Europe. In the Catholic calendar, there was a special day dedicated to these saints. In different countries, it was celebrated at different times: in the UK, Germany, Denmark, and Estonia — on June 27, and in Scandinavia, including Finland — on July 27.How the Holiday Came to FinlandSun Day was first mentioned in Finnish historical sources in 1652. At that time, it was a religious holiday and celebrated on June 26.
