Augen schwarz: Metamorphosen des Bildes
Black Eyes: Fact, Myth and Poetry“Black eyes, passionate eyes…” — this phrase sounds like a spell. It is in almost every second love song, in every third romance, in countless poems, and even in the titles of films. But do black eyes actually exist? Or is it just a metaphor, a beautiful hyperbole that we are accustomed to using to describe an endless gaze? The answer, as often happens, lies at the intersection of biology, culture, and poetry. Let's figure out what black eyes are in reality, how to understand them, and why this image has become one of the most enduring and captivating in world art.Biology: Do black eyes actually exist?Let's start with science. Strictly speaking, there are no purely black eyes in humans. The color of the iris is determined by the content of the pigment melanin: the more there is, the darker the eyes. The darkest variant is very, very dark brown eyes, in which the brown pigment is so dense and saturated that they seem black under normal lighting. Especially if the pupil is dilated, and the shadow from the eyelashes falls on the iris. In this case, the eye really looks like a bottomless black depth. Some people with very dark brown eyes may have the effect of a “black iris” — when the iris almost merges with the pupil. But if you look closely in bright light, you can notice a warm brown or even amber hue. There is no absolutely black iris, like coal or soot, in humans — for this, a different type of pigment is needed, which we do not have. So “black eyes” is always an exaggeration, but an exaggeration based on a real visual effect.Interestingly, in some cultures, especially in Southern Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America, dark brown eyes are indeed called “black”. This is not a mistake, but a feature of linguistic perception. For a Spanish, Arabic, or Turkish speaker, “ojos negros” or “kara gözler” simply mean very dark eyes, not biologically black. So we are dealing not with a scientific term, but with a poetic image.Perception: ... Читать далее
