Trade: from skin exchange to mouse clickTrade may be the second oldest occupation of humanity after hunting. It emerged when one person realized they had an extra skin, while their neighbor had an extra fish. Exchange became the first step towards civilization. Today, trade is not just about buying products or clothes. It is a complex system of relationships, values, cultural codes, and even psychological rituals. But while trade was a necessity for survival in the past, it has now become something more — and sometimes it can make you want to turn off shopping for a day or even a weekend. Let's understand when trade appeared, why it is needed by modern people, and why shops close on certain days in some countries.When and how trade appeared: from the Stone Age to the InternetThe first trade was natural: without money, counters, or price tags. Two people met and exchanged goods they needed. This could be fish for grain, skin for a stone ax, decorations for weapons. Gradually, exchange became more systematic. Markets appeared where merchants from different tribes met. In Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, trade routes already existed. Later, in Babylon, silver ingots began to be used as a prototype of money. And in Lydia (the territory of modern Turkey) in the 7th century BC, the first coins appeared. From this moment on, trade became not just an exchange, but a calculation.In the Middle Ages, trade flourished thanks to the Great Silk Road, which connected China with Europe. Merchants brought silk, spices, jewels, and ideas, religion, and art. Cities standing on trade routes became richer and centers of culture.
