Happy from Nowhere: Why Joy Sometimes Comes Uninvited You're sitting in a bus, looking out the window, and suddenly — warmth spreads through your chest. Or you're walking down the street on a gray day, and for no apparent reason, you feel like smiling. Nothing has happened. No one called, praised, or gave a gift. Just — happiness. Uncaused, sudden, inexplicable. Where does it come from? Why do we feel it in moments when there is no visible cause? The answer lies not in events, but in ourselves. The Body Remembers Before the Mind Our body is an amazing system that knows more about us than we do ourselves. Sometimes our body produces dopamine and serotonin not because something good has happened, but simply because internal processes have taken such a turn. It's like a random smile from nature — neurotransmitters are released into the blood, and we feel euphoria. We start looking for a reason in the surrounding world, but it may not be there. It's just biochemistry that decided to throw us a party without a reason. Such a mechanism is ingrained evolutionarily: it helped our ancestors survive in uncertain conditions. A sudden surge of energy and good mood could be a signal that danger has passed, even if we didn't realize it. Today this mechanism works as an \"internal surprise\" that is independent of external conditions. The Brain Seeks Meanings Even When There Are None The human brain cannot stand emptiness. When we feel something strong, we immediately start looking for an explanation. \"I am happy because the sun is shining,\" \"because spring has come,\" \"because I've had a good night's sleep.\" But often, this is just an attempt to find a reason where there is none. We cannot admit that happiness can be accidental, because it contradicts our desire to control our lives. Therefore, we invent reasons retroactively.
