Image of Perun in Balmondt's poem: hidden contexts
The Thunder in the Strings: Hidden Meanings of Balmont's \"Perun's Day\" Konstantin Balmont — a stormy poet, a singer of the moment, a man who could hear music in the roars of thunder and see poetry in pagan cults. His turn to Slavic mythology was not a nod to fashion or an exotic obsession. It was a profound, world-viewing step, an attempt to find the roots of the Russian soul in pre-Christian antiquity. The poem \"Perun\" (often quoted in connection with Perun's Day) is one of the brightest examples of such a poetic pilgrimage into the past. But what lies behind the apparent simplicity of these lines? Why did a symbolist, a singer of refined decadent experiences, suddenly need a rough, mighty Slavic thunder god? The Text as an Incantation: A Look at the Poem Before diving into the depths, let's recall the text that is often published as an epigraph to descriptions of Perun's Day: At Perun's height is mighty, A pleasant face, a golden beard, He rules the moist cloud, Like a young maiden. At Perun's thoughts are swift, What he wants — so now, He sprinkles sparks, throws sparks From sparkling eyes. At Perun's passions are fiery, But, having reached his goal, What he loved — he tears apart, Burned the cloud — and he is no more. At first glance, we are faced with a simple, almost epic description of a pagan deity. But these twelve lines hide many layers of meaning that reveal not only mythology but also the philosophy of Balmont himself, his view of the nature of creativity and the place of the poet in the world. The First Layer: The Rehabilitation of Paganism For Balmont, like many symbolists, turning to ancient beliefs was not a flight into archaism, but an attempt to restore the lost connection between man and nature. Christianity, with its asceticism and the idea of the sinfulness of the flesh, seemed too disconnected from earthly, elemental beginnings. But paganism — this is a religion of power, passion, immediacy. In the poem, Perun appears not as a fearsome puni ... Read more
