Judges and neural networks: interaction in the present and future
Judge of the Future: When the Robe Meets the AlgorithmImagine a court where artificial intelligence analyzes evidence faster than a judge can open a file. Where a neural network predicts the outcome of a case with accuracy down to the percentage. Where a robot drafts documents, and the judge only oversees the process. Sounds like science fiction? But it's not far off. Courts around the world are starting to use new technologies, and this is changing not only the procedure but also the essence of justice. What awaits the judge in the future? What will his work look like? And how can we control what may get out of control?Artificial Intelligence in the Court: Assistant or ThreatArtificial intelligence is already being used in judicial systems in some countries. For example, in China, neural networks help judges draft decisions for minor cases. In the United States, programs analyze the risk of recidivism and influence decisions on early release. In Estonia, a system is being developed to consider minor claims entirely in an automated mode. Artificial intelligence can process huge amounts of data, find analogies, check the logic of arguments, and identify contradictions. This may save time, reduce workload, and even reduce the impact of the human factor. However, AI has its limitations. It does not understand emotions, is not capable of empathy, and cannot take into account the uniqueness of a human destiny. An algorithm may be biased if it was trained on biased data. It may give the correct legal answer, but wrong from a human perspective. Therefore, the judge of the future is more likely to work with AI rather than be replaced by it, like a pilot with an autopilot: managing, correcting, and taking responsibility.Digitization of Processes: From Paper to DataToday, courts are actively transitioning to electronic document exchange. Cases are filed online, hearings are conducted via video conferencing, and decisions are published in open databases. In the future, this wil ... Read more
