Lammas (Lugnasad), or Lughnasa in Celtic
Lammas (Lughnasa): When Bread Becomes SacredThe first day of August. For most people, just a summer day, the peak of vacation season and beach time. But for those who remember ancient traditions, this date is one of the most important turning points of the year. Lammas, or Lughnasa, is a festival of the first harvest, a day when the earth begins to give back what has been sown into it. This is the time when grain becomes bread, and bread becomes a symbol of life, gratitude, and hope for the future. This day intertwines Celtic mythology, Christian rituals, and pagan rites, creating an amazing kaleidoscope of traditions that are still alive today.Lammas or Lughnasa: Two Names, One EssenceThis festival has two main names, each revealing its essence from different angles. 'Lammas' is an Anglo-Saxon word, derived from 'hlaf-mas' or 'loaf-mass', which literally translates as 'bread festival' or 'bread mass'. On this day, bread baked from the grain of the new harvest was brought to church and consecrated. This was an act of gratitude for the gift of the earth and a request for continued blessing.'Lughnasa' is an older name, Celtic in origin. It comes from the name of the god Lugh, one of the main deities in the ancient Celtic pantheon. Lugh was the patron of agriculture, crafts, arts, and martial arts. His epithets - Longarm and Many-Skilled - speak of his versatility and power. The name 'Lughnasa' translates as 'assembly of Lugh' or 'wedding of Lugh'. It was a day when the god who gave fertility and prosperity was honored.Interestingly, both names - Celtic and Anglo-Saxon - have been preserved and are still used today, often as synonyms. In Ireland, the festival is called Lá Lúnasa, in Scotland - Lùnastal, and in England - Lammas. But the essence remains unchanged: this is the day of the first harvest, a day of gratitude to the earth, and the beginning of a new season of the year.Legend of the God Lugh and the Goddess TailtiuEvery ancient festival has a myth behind it, an ...
