Worker and Protestant Ethics: Two Roots of One Tree At first glance, the Russian \"worker\" — a person who toils from dawn to dusk without complaining or demanding reward — and Protestant work ethics, which emerged in Europe in the 16th to 17th centuries, seem to be phenomena from different worlds. One is the product of the peasant community, Orthodox humility, and Soviet heroism. The other is the offspring of capitalism, Calvinism, and individualism. However, upon closer examination, an amazing similarity is discovered between them. Both elevate work to the status of the highest value. Both condemn idleness. Both associate work with moral dignity. And both, despite the difference in origin, shape a person who cannot imagine themselves without work. So, what are their commonalities and what is the fundamental difference? Protestant Ethics: Work as Vocation and Sign of Election The formula of Protestant ethics, described by Max Weber, is simple: work is not just a means of earning a living, it is service to God. A person who works diligently, honestly, and successfully demonstrates their election. Success in worldly affairs becomes a sign of divine favor. Therefore, idleness is not just laziness but a sin. Money earned through work should not be spent on luxury — it should be reinvested, multiplied. This created that same \"new man\" of capitalism: disciplined, rational, responsible, result-oriented. The key word here is \"vocation.\" The German word \"Beruf\" (profession) etymologically relates to the concept of vocation. That is, a person does not just choose work — they follow the will of God, who destined them for this path. And that's why work should not be a burden — it should be the fulfillment of duty.
